Jeff Agoos retires

Posted on

Jeff Agoos retired today. His career included championships with DC United and San Jose, and a year with the Metrostars, and 134 caps for the national team. Although he had a penchant for costly own goals or mistakes - the ones against Jamaica in the 98qualifiers and in the Portugal map during the 2002 World Cup, he was a solid, reliable, albeit slow defender with a wicked shot and good ability to start attacks out of his left fullback postition. He also had an extensive jersey collection (the Post ran a story a few years ago, but I can't find a link to it now), and ironically also burned his US jersey when he was cut from the 1994 World Cup team shortly before the USA hosted the tournament.

"I've come to the time in my life where I'd like to step back and look at different avenues of life and see where they lead," said Agoos, who ranks seventh in MLS games started with 237.

Evo Morales still ahead in Bolivian presidential polls

Posted on

It still looks like Bolivians will elect Evo Morales, a coca farmer who's promised to make coca growing legal again, as the next president. Elections will be held on the 18th of the month and Morales has an 32.8% to 27.7% lead over the other leading candidate Jorge "Tuto" Quiroga. Morales lost the 2002 elections by a mere 2 points. No matter who wins, the likelihood of the next government lasting beyond the year is low.

But this being Bolivia, nothing is simple. Unless Mr Morales gains more than 50% at the polls, the next president will be decided by a Congress vote - which is likely to go against him. The outcome could be catastrophic, the country becoming once again riven with protest and instability.

Design facelift

Posted on

Sandy went through one recently and Tony switched his look yesterday. I really liked the layout for Tony's blog, particularly the pictures in the right most column, so I decided to emulate it. CSS as usual, made this really, really easy. I'd appreciate any feedback, if you actually read posts on my site instead of in your aggregator.
