Meet the new Pope, same as the old Pope

Posted on

Super conservative and former Hitler Youth, Joseph Ratzinger has been elected pope by the college of Cardinal. Has the Church missed an opportunity for some much needed change? Only time will tell.

Although there is no suggestion that he was involved in any atrocities, his service may be contrasted by opponents with the attitude of John Paul II, who took part in anti-Nazi theatre performances in his native Poland and in 1986 became the first pope to visit Rome's synagogue.

Post title inspired by The Who's Won't get Fooled Again.

In the Vatican, he has been the driving force behind crackdowns on liberation theology, religious pluralism, challenges to traditional moral teachings on issues such as homosexuality, and dissent on such issues as women's ordination.

Is this really news?

Posted on

Our local Fox affiliate aired a non-news consumer report story tonight that was simply ridiculous. Get this, Paer Shredders are DANGEROUS, epecially to your kids (and pets too)! Especially the cross cutting kind. Apparently, the shredder is simply waiting to lure your offspring and chop off their fingers. What evil little, umm...inamimate objects?

Isn't a big part of being a parent being able to watch your kids, and figure out what poses a danger to them? If you don't know this (and I'm talking to you lady who swore off shredders because YOU LET YOUR 3 YEAR OLD HELP YOU SHRED PAPERS), then what are you doing reproducing? Thank you FOX 5 for reminding me why I don't watch the evening news.

I don't mean to sound callous, accidents happen, and some aren't preventable and those are really tragic. This was just filler.

MLS Labor Agreement

Posted on

Announcement of a new MLS Labor Agreement was released today, on a friday afternoon to guarantee low exposure(?). It's a 5 year collective bargaining agreement. We've come a long way in 10 years, when the players actual sued the league. Not many details, but minimum salary will go from about \$28k to \$34k by 2009, players get a 401k plan, and higher bonuses for regalur season wins.

The agreement increases the minimum salary from \$24,000 to \$28,000 this season and to \$34,000 in the final year of the contract (2009). Foose said the players were happiest with health coverage paid completely by the league as well as retirement benefits and the arbitration procedure.

And curiously:

The players have gained protection for testing positive for recreational drugs, incurring graduated penalties before termination, Foose said.
