Almost a single-entity NHL

Posted on

Wow, Bain Capital Partners and Game Plan pitched buying the NHL and setting it up as a Single Entity. I've written before that its possible. The NHL owners would follow the lead of Major League Soccer. Instead of a franchise model like the NFL/MLB/NBA, the league owns all teams and player contracts. It's even legally testted - MLS owners were challenged in court by some players, led by the NFL(!) Player Association's own lawyer. Aren't there other single-entity structured leagues in the US - the AFL maybe?

U-17 Championship to experiment w/microchip in soccer ball.

Posted on

At the next under 17 world championship, FIFA will experiment with microchips embedded in the soccer ball to signal the referee when the ball crosses the goal line. They're taking steps to insure that human error doesn't lead to bad calls that can alter a game result.

Calls for new technology resurfaced in England after Tottenham was denied a clear goal at Manchester United on Jan. 4. Goalkeeper Roy Carroll dropped the ball behind the line, but the officials missed the call.

Claria, spyware vendor, on Homeland Security privacy advisory board.

Posted on

Hopefully this is really more of a hire-the-bad-guys-to-help-the-good-guys kind of thing but I severely doubt it. Seems that the Department of Homeland Security has made an executive from Claria, formerly Gator, to a committee on protecting privacy. The article also has an excellent content-free defense of the inclusion from chief privacy officer Nuala O'Connor Kelly.

In the past, Claria's pop-up ad software has riled some users who claimed it was annoying, installed without permission, and not easy to delete. Publishers also were irked about pop-up ads for a rival's product appearing next to their own Web sites. Catalog retailer L.L. Bean sued Gator for alleged trademark infringement.
