U-17 Championship to experiment w/microchip in soccer ball.

At the next under 17 world championship, FIFA will experiment with microchips embedded in the soccer ball to signal the referee when the ball crosses the goal line. They’re taking steps to insure that human error doesn’t lead to bad calls that can alter a game result.

Calls for new technology resurfaced in England after Tottenham was
denied a clear goal at Manchester United on Jan. 4. Goalkeeper Roy
Carroll dropped the ball behind the line, but the officials missed the
call.
