The US team handily beat Guatemala 4-0 in another preparatory friendly yesterday. For the US to solidify itself as a regional power, it has to take care of the minnows without breaking a sweat. Bruce Arena has his team doing that, and yesterday emphasizes that we’ve been doing this consistently for more than a year now. In Frisco, the US team did it without Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, or Taylow Twellman. Ben Olsen had a fantastic goal (god I love long range shots!), Chris Klein had a goal and assist to make up for a less than adequate performance last week against Japan, and Eddie Pope continues to show that he belongs on the back line.
All four DC United players earned a cap in this game (Olsen, Caroll, Boswell, Quaranta). When is the last time that happened? I’m betting it was at the 1999 Confederations Cup.
It was also nice to head into the Lucky Bar in DC to watch the game with Joe, Chris, and to meet D. Joe, I used the Internet Anagram server to generate my blog title.
Update: video highlights and player interviews available on the USSF site.
